Rocking hard at the New Cobalt

Hey Sloan Bones here, lovely weekend last week at the New Cobalt. As I stepped inside weird wonderful memories came flooding back. But honestly the kicker were the washrooms which were in this case slightly cleaner and so was the over all vibe. The best part by far were all the old arcade pinball machines (which were part of the old Cobalt) but just more of them.

Now onto the show the first band was A Name Unheard who right from the get go opened the night with a bang. A very fluid set with very few breaks and also a blues tune called Human which was a nice touch. Guitarist-Lead Vocalist Hussein Elnamer has a stadium ready voice which will sound awesome when they go record at The Warehouse in Sept.

Grey Empire hit the stage next with another three piece which was the theme of the night. This band just like the last came out hitting hard and fast especially their drummer Thomas Nugent. Their sound reminded me of Modest Mouse amped up. The two other members Rob Speers and Mark Payerl switched from bass to guitar several times over but only sang together on a few songs which was a shame.

Dead Voices played next with Allie Sheldan ( Bassist-lead Vocals) belting out Smokey vocals and a raccoon tail coming off her bass strap.  This band seems to work if you like old school rock they definitely called on some old Dead Voice s of rock to help them out.  There was a faster edge to their music and if you like your music straight up then it’s probably your bag, just not mine.

The Manvils ended their going away show with a blast by killing the stage.  Mikey Manvil made his guitar look tiny with his huge rock presence followed by jumping into the crowd and a nearby bathtub for a few songs that drove everyone nuts.  The Manvils remind me a bit of Wolf Mother and will take Toronto by storm when they play next.

My favorite song played by the band was Turpentine an interesting style of blues rock and will surly be a hit off their self titled new album.

Well the new Cobalt was host to a great night filled with four -3 piece bands who said good journey to The Manvils in the style of rocking their asses off.

I am

Sloan Bones
